This historic Park Slope townhouse was presented an opportunity to expand usable space on the lower level. Our goal was to step out into the garden area without disrupting the overall historical integrity of the space.
In order to reinstate a ‘true’ parlor floor, the kitchen was repositioned from the upper level to the garden level and additional square footage appended. Working with Landmarks on one of six unique townhouses on the street, the original window openings and sills were kept, now used as a liminal space between the new kitchen and dining areas. The purpose of the new extended space was to create an ‘al fresco’ dining experience within a garden, enhancing space of the coveted Brooklyn backyard. The addition of skylights illuminates this new interior structural feature and on the summer solstice, highlights the existing window sills. The result is a minimal yet textured space that relates both to the historical as much to the modern in a timeless way.
