Floating stairs and form-fitting cabinetry unite Italian craftsmanship with American construction
53rd Street
New York, New York
With architectural elevations and framework to guide us, the custom lacquer Italian wall panels were fabricated abroad and arrived to line the entirety of the sleek footprint of this new-build townhouse. The client, leaning on his Italian origins, was impressed that every detail was executed and perfectly fitted down to the last millimeter, fitting everything like a fine artisan glove.
Custom cabinetry was incorporated into virtually every space, extending storage options within the minimalist vernacular. All were all hand-built in Italy by artisans following the highest level of materials and fabrication then shipped to site for installation. All drawings needed an extraordinary level of detail and exacting measurement to ensure successful installation.
Minimalism was also given an Italian expression in bathrooms where classic marble makes an elegant yet streamlined statement.
The main interior stair was also an exercise of art and engineering. Void of any vertical supports, the structure fulfills the promise of a fully cantilevered, truly ‘floating’ stair. The ‘starfire’ glass railing panels float on the promise of the wood treads; substantial in construction, they hide the heavy the steel necessary to achieve this seemingly delicate railing and overall floating .
