AMITY

An abandoned annex rises back to triumph

Amity Street
Brooklyn, New York

Built in the late 1800s as an annex to the old Litch Hospital, the building sat empty for many years waiting tethered to the nearby modern facility. Several years later, the hospital decided to sell and developers quickly divided the historical structure into three residential units, each to be renovated from the building shell forward. One interior feature remaining was the grand stair.

Our client occupied the center unit which was fortunate enough to have the former main entrance serve as the front door to the residence. While wanting to create a contemporary and clean overall interior, the original door was retained and all details restored. These original details were enhanced by merging original elements with a modern aesthetic. The main space, after much neglect, needed a full interior and with its expansive rooms and stair, it was an easy choice to keep the aesthetic minimal and clean, letting the historical details be noticed while the modern aesthetic remained silent.

A hardworking and sleek kitchen was achieved with a Henry Built install, new bathrooms were kept in subtle shades and new gas fireplaces were installed within the brickwork of the wood burning originals. With the originals so damaged with time, historically correct mantles and surrounds were chosen and installed to harmonize the historic with the update.

The existing exterior columns - icons in the neighborhood - became the guardians for the massive outdoor roof terrace so the family could enjoy all 2000 sq designed for family cookouts, entertaining and, above all, lounging.
