
GARFIELD: Behind the scenes
Every project has a story and we believe in curiosity, so here we wanted to provide some backstory on our work; before images, drawings or construction images that may be helpful to you in understanding what we do and how we do it. Enjoy!
Before: Typical throughout the home, all of the historical trims and molding felt 'cloying' to he client
Before: The old finishes and radiators were dilapidated, antiquated and worn.
Before: The old skylight was leaking and the hallways lacked presence
Before: All the bathrooms needed an upgrade
Before: The main stair had beautiful character and charm, we wanted to keep it but make it more modern.
Concept: borrowing from the Case Study houses in California, we chose a simple frame to connect the interior to the exterior garden.

Before: The narrow stair to the backyard felt like a barrier between the outdoors and the interior

Construction: Opening up the rooms to address the client's desire for modern open space
Construction: The main stairs were protected and the main relieving wall supported to insert new structure and open up the rear wall to the garden
Construction: Block work is always an affordable load bearing strategy
Construction: Opening up walls to the hallways permitted them to be flooded with light
Construction: The client's desire in the primary bathroom was to combined a shower and tub, like Japan, where one soaks after a shower.
Construction: New steel columns and beams and full width accordion doors
Construction: The new steel pergola and lower level addition opening directly onto the garden
